Austria enters April 2026 with a mix of financial relief and new costs that will affect everyday life — from mobile phone bills to supermarket shopping. Several regulatory changes come into force this month, reshaping how consumers communicate, rent, shop, and even smoke.

Mobile Phone Costs Rise, New Provider Launches

Beginning 1 April, most mobile phone tariffs in Austria will become more expensive. The increase is driven by value‑protection clauses embedded in many contracts, allowing providers to adjust prices automatically in line with inflation. For 2026, that adjustment amounts to 3.5 percent, based on the consumer price index.

At the same time, the telecom market gains a new competitor: “Yellow”, a mobile provider launched by Österreichische Post AG. Its arrival also introduces a brand‑new Austrian phone prefix: 0693.

New Rules for E‑Cigarettes and Nicotine Pouches

Major changes hit the nicotine market as e‑cigarettes and nicotine pouches become fully subject to Austria’s tobacco tax laws. From April onward, these products:

  • May only be sold in tobacconists (Trafiken)
  • Must comply with a comprehensive advertising ban
  • Require proper tax registration and documentation

The government aims to curb nicotine consumption by aligning these products with the strict rules already applied to traditional cigarettes.

Rent Relief for Over a Million Households

Austria’s newly adopted rental reform package takes effect for the first time this month. Roughly 1.1 million households are expected to benefit from the updated regulations.

Key elements include:

  • Adjusted rules for private and municipal rental sectors
  • Stronger consideration of previously unregulated private rents
  • A legal cap limiting rent increases to a maximum of 1 percent

In Vienna, this means the official benchmark rent rises only slightly — from €6.67 to €6.74 per square meter.

Clearer Labels Against “Shrinkflation”

Supermarkets face a major transparency requirement starting in April. Products affected by shrinkflation — where package contents shrink while prices stay the same or increase — must now be clearly labeled.

Warnings such as “Attention: Less content – higher price” must be displayed:

  • Directly on the product
  • On the shelf
  • Or in its immediate vicinity

Under the new Anti‑Mogelpackungs‑Gesetz, these notices must remain visible for at least 60 days.
